Sikinos

The Island Where Time Slows Down

Cyclades · Greece

Between Trails and Silence

Walking Sikinos is a rare privilege.

In an archipelago celebrated for crowds and nightlife, Sikinos moves at a different pace — the pace of mule tracks, wind through the maquis, footsteps on ancient cobblestones. Seven marked trails cross the island in every direction: from inland villages down to secluded coves, past whitewashed chapels perched on the rocks and sweeping views over the Aegean Sea.

Routes range from easy coastal walks to more challenging climbs across the ridgeline. No crowds, no rush. Just you, the landscape, and the extraordinary light of the Cyclades. All trails are mapped and available on standard hiking apps.

Beaches Without Filters

Sand, pebbles, rocks — and a sea that needs no Instagram.

The beaches of Sikinos are not designed to impress. They just do. Agios Georgios, Dialiskari, Azalas — each one has its own distinct character. Some are reachable on foot along the trails, others only by boat. A few sun loungers, no pumping music, no beach clubs.

The water is what you'd expect from the Cyclades: cold, crystalline, and an almost unreal shade of blue. Those who discover these shores once tend to return every year.

An Island With Memory

Two thousand years of history you can actually touch.

At the heart of the island, the Episkopi stands as one of the most unusual monuments in the Cyclades: a Roman temple from the 3rd century AD, later converted into a Byzantine church and then a monastery.

The medieval village of Kastro, perched on the hilltop, tells another story: narrow alleyways, houses built shoulder to shoulder for mutual protection, and a bell tower still marking the hours. History here is not behind glass — it is walked through and very much alive.

Life in the Villages

Chorio and Alopronia: two faces, one soul.

Chorio is the beating heart of the island: a square with a handful of tavernas, the church, and residents sitting in the shade. Conversations last long, wine is local, and fish was in the sea the same morning.

Alopronia is the port: small, tidy, with fishing boats and a few cafés along the waterfront. Do not expect a nightlife scene. Expect good food, honest hospitality, and evenings that stretch gently into the dark without anyone rushing home.
